Most of my hunting is where the landowner says bucks outside the ears only or does. By the day before thanksgiving I hadn’t had an opportunity at a good buck, so we hunted a different piece of land that the owner says any buck but no does.  With snow in the forcast (I will be plowing and not hunting) I decided to take any buck.

Hunting a spot with no stands, I was on the ground and alomost got run over by a couple does that were chasing each other and playing around.  Shorty after that this spike came along and got to 4 yards before he saw me.  He bounced out to 65 yards and had a stare down.  I decided he would taste good and shot him.  After dressing him I headed towards my brother and made it about 50 yards from the spike when I saw a deer in the brush looking at me.

Looking through the binoculars confirmed he was a nice one.  After a 5 minute stare down, he realized I knew he was there and he swapped ends and jumped over the hill.  No shot opportunity with the bad angles and all the brush.  I quickly headed back where I had come from hoping he would try to circle me.  That is what he did.  I saw him sneaking on his belly on top of the next ridge trying to get around me.  He paused for a short second at about 80 yards and I shot.  After the shot he jumped over the ridge heading for a road.  I scampered up the hill expecting to see him crossing the road.  After a short tracking job I found him dead next to the fence along the road.  In about an hour I filled both buck tags.  Great morning.
Both shot with a Benelli Super Nova with a custom slug barrel.  Hornaday SST slugs were used.  Spike weighed 115# dressed and the 8 point was 145#.  One and two year old deer respectively.    Pics were taken by myself with a self timer.  Deer shot 11/25/09

I shot it on 11-16 at 8:00 a.m. I was 30 feet up in a white pine, overlooking a lot of thick cover that the deer feel comfortable moving through.  Deer were active that morning with bucks seeking does. I heard some loud crashing and then a small buck came through followed by the one I killed. I believe he was running the small buck out of the area.

I knew he was a shooter and had to follow him with the scope and make sure I had a clear shot. I hit him good and then watched him run 50 yards and go down dead in a matter of seconds.  Ideally the way every shot should be. He is a 10 point with a broken off 4th point on right side. I killed him in ottawa county just barely off the kent -ottawa border.
