Saving Lives at Eikenhout

Every day we see employees and customers come into our stores full of sweat and hard work.  They are seasoned for the elements, but what happens if they go into cardiac arrest or experience a stroke.  We want to help.

At the end of September, our corporate GR store will be installing the latest AED (Automatic External Defibrillator) as a part of a special grant from Michigan Public Health Institute to better assist employees and customers.

This “Work Well Michigan”  program has our employees voluntarily attending eight weeks of training where they are learning the signs and risk factors for heart attacks and strokes.  Employees are encouraged to develop a healthy eating and exercise lifestyle while they track their daily consumption of fruits, vegetables and exercise.

The early morning meeting is a donut free zone.  New healthy snacks are being tested and the human guinea pigs don’t seem to mind at all.

Besides training our own employees, Eikenhout has selected seven individuals who will be trained specifically to respond to health emergencies by being trained and certified to use the AED (automatic external defibrillator) machine.  Grand Rapids has a few other employees already trained in CPR and the AED and even have three  fireman on staff who are trained as first responders.

We are hoping all of this training is academic only, but we are preparing for every situation.  Have a safe and healthy summer.
