Sweating it out

It was hot and humid, and I was helping out by dropping off six square of shingles and some hip and ridge to a job site. It should be noted that I do sweat a lot! I walked each of the 21 bundles across the yard to the ladder the roofers were using. I knew I could always change my shirt when I get back.
The roofers offered to help, but I told them to keep working and that I’d handle getting them a few shingles.
Soon after I left, the contractor called our Lansing store and asked who the new guy was and if they could possibly get him to do all of their deliveries. The customers couldn’t believe that the delivery guy was an owner of Eikenhout. I love it when customers appreciate that extra we put in our service, but that is the essence of our company. We are all here to serve and help our customers. Everyone.
In the spring of 1978 I worked part time at Eikenhout while laid off from my brick layer job. Henry Schierbeek then asked me if I would like to work full time driving the big truck pulling the hilo. I quickly accepted and have worked every job from truck driver, warehouse manager, inside and outside sales to owner. It is my privilege to still help out in many of those areas, working everyday and seeing our customers at the grass roots level while working shoulder to shoulder with our own employees.
We take pride in our team and our customers and know that helping each other comes first. You can always change your shirt later.
