Christmas and Trains by Greg

Thanksgiving weekend I made it to the Christmas tree farm with Betsy and our son Jack.  Our teenage daughters were too deep in the shopping mode to go along.  ”Dad, we have to go to the mall cause there’s stuff on sale” was their battle cry.

When I try to point out that there will be another sale next week, I get that “how can you be so stupid” look.  But the advantage of having a teenage driver is that I can now have them explore the magical world of sales without me.  By the way, how much shopping can they have left.  The “sales” have been going on for weeks.

Betsy had Jack help decorate the tree and ran the Lionel around the bottom of it. Jack spent untold hours with Thomas the Train as a toddler and setting up the Lionel at Christmas always re-kindles his interest in trains.  He is now convinced that we need to build a garaden “G” scale railroad in the back yard.

lionel-trainsSince last years project, the pizza oven, is done I really can’t argue with him.  It sounds like a cool plan.  Collecting all of the pieces and parts will be a good winter project for us.  Does anyone have a box of track in the attic that they want to part with?

Last Sunday, Betsy and I got to spend some time with the fifth graders at our church.  We read the story of Pentecost in the early chapters of the book of Acts.  It’s not the official “Christmas Story,” but it is definitely about living with a Christmas spirit.  These first early church members fostered a giving community as they actively practiced sharing with those less fortunate.  All the needs were met as this spirit of giving saturated everyone’s hearts and minds (Acts 2:44-47; 4:32-35).  These are the feelings and actions that we crave during this holiday.

We are especially thankful for the many friendships we have with our customer’s, business partners and community.  It is these relationships that have truly made Eikenhout successful over all these years.  Our hopes and prayers for all of you is a happy, healthy, productive and Christ filled New Year.
