Eikenhout sells field marker?
The year doesn’t matter, but it was a long time ago. Eikenhout’s corporate office, being literally feet away from the railroad tracks, had huge advantages when purchasing roofing products. The box cars brought in the products and our customers saved money and always had what they needed at their finger tips.
One product that Eikenhout bought large quantities of was Georgian white marble chips. These were used on commercial built up roofs. Here was a company that was not going to be wasting any scraps and were the forerunners for recycling as they took the by products of the white marble chips and made an incredible field marker, Plus 5, for athletic fields.
Eikenhout became their Kent County distributor and purchased several box car loads every year to ship to the local schools. Some of the smaller schools would actually drive over and pick up their own field marker. This is how a roofing, siding and windows distributor became known as the place to pick up your supplies to mark out the fields.
Bear Bryant, legendary college football coach, known best for his 25 years of successful coaching at Alabama and his signature houndstooth hat, became the spokesman for Plus 5 as it was and is the official line marking material of the National Federation of State High School Associations.
The railroad tracks are still feet from Eikenhout, High Schools still use Plus 5, and we still sell it. Now it comes in neat bags that come on a semi trailer instead of a box car, but schools still recognize Eikenhout as their supplier of field marker. Now you know the rest of the story.
